The Garnavillo Museum’s bell platform hasn’t supported a church bell for a long time! The bell that originally stood atop the platform when it was the Congregational Church, was sold to St. Peter Lutheran church in 1945-46, when their current church building was built after their fire. The platform, because of its height, wasn’t subject too often to care and repair and paint. And as a result was looking bad and deteriorating. Its roof had also started to leak which was a danger to the exhibits below.
With the help of supporters, Burnell Smith, the late William Collings, and grants from NYL-Your Cause ($1,000) and the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation ($1,500), the Garnavillo Historical Society was able to have work done to repair and protect the wood of the platform and replace the roof with rubber roofing. Total cost of the project was $6,069.25. Work was completed in May by House to Home Remodeling. Now the bell platform looks nice and no longer leaks!
